What are internal links and why do they matter for SEO?

By David James, SEO & Digital Strategy · Updated July 2026

Internal links are links from one page of your website to another. They look trivial and they're one of the most underused levers in SEO: they tell Google what your site is about, which pages matter most, and they move ranking authority to the pages that book work.

What internal links do

Three jobs. They help Google discover your pages (crawlers follow links). They describe your pages: the clickable text of a link tells Google what the destination is about. And they distribute authority: when other sites link to your homepage or a popular article, internal links pass that strength through to the service pages that do the converting.

The structure that works

Think hub and spoke. Your service page is the hub; supporting guides and articles are spokes that all link back to it with descriptive anchor text. A plumber's 'hot water systems Brisbane' page should be linked from every related article: repairs, replacement costs, brands compared. Google reads that cluster and concludes the hub is the authority on the topic.

  • Every important page reachable within three clicks of the homepage
  • Descriptive anchor text: 'SEO pricing guide', never 'click here'
  • Guides link to service pages, service pages link to related guides
  • Fix orphan pages: anything with zero internal links is invisible

The mistakes that quietly hurt

Orphan pages that nothing links to. Anchor text like 'read more' that describes nothing. Every link pointed at the homepage while money pages starve. And navigation menus stuffed with thirty links, which dilutes every one of them. An internal-link audit is often the cheapest ranking win available on an established site, because the authority already exists: it's just pointed at the wrong pages.

Where this fits in the bigger picture

Internal linking is one of the structural fixes in the Conversion stage of our framework: it costs nothing but thought, it's entirely within your control, and it multiplies the value of every piece of content you publish afterwards. It's standard work inside rank.™ and rank+™.
