How much does SEO cost in Australia? The 2026 price guide

By David James, SEO & Digital Strategy · Updated July 2026

SEO pricing in Australia runs from $99-a-month packages to $10,000+ enterprise retainers, and the range confuses everyone. This guide breaks down what each band buys, where the money goes, and how to match the spend to your market.

The price bands, plainly

Traditional Australian agency SEO broadly falls into three bands. $800 to $1,500 a month is the entry point for genuine hands-on work: content targeting researched keywords, on-page fixes and someone accountable for results. $1,500 to $3,000 buys full management with strategy, link building and regular content in a competitive market. Above $3,000 is for competitive industries and multi-location businesses where SEO is a primary growth channel.

Below that sits a band that needs care. Under $500 a month has historically bought junk: automated reports, directory links, activity without outcomes. What's changed is purpose-built automation: platforms where a strategist configures the keyword plan once and AI executes it weekly. The difference between the two is whether a human chose the strategy - and whether the website receiving the traffic can convert it.

  • Under $500/mo, old style: automated activity, rarely moves rankings
  • Under $500/mo, new style: strategist-configured automation on a conversion-built site
  • $800-$1,500/mo: hands-on agency SEO for local and niche markets
  • $1,500-$3,000/mo: full management in competitive markets
  • $3,000+/mo: competitive industries, multiple locations, aggressive growth

Why cheap SEO costs more than it saves

The billboard test applies: if an agency can deliver SEO for $99 a month, the work is automated, outsourced or not happening. Google's systems are specifically built to ignore the tactics cheap packages rely on, and recovering a site from spammy link building costs more than doing it properly the first time.

The other hidden cost is time. A year on a package that produces nothing is a year your competitor spent compounding: content published, authority built, rankings banked. In SEO, the expensive part of cheap is the lost twelve months.

Where the money actually goes

A properly priced SEO engagement is buying hours from people who know what they're doing: keyword and competitor research, content written to rank and convert, technical fixes, internal linking, authority building and measurement. Content is usually the biggest line item, because it's the part that compounds: a page that ranks keeps producing leads for years after it's paid for.

How AI changes the equation

AI has changed the economics of SEO: research, drafting, technical auditing and reporting that once consumed a retainer's hours now run largely automated. What AI can't replace is strategy: choosing the keywords that book work, positioning against your competitors, and judging what a market will respond to.

That's the model behind LINK's two SEO products. rank.™ is the fully automated tier: a strategist maps your keywords, then AI runs weekly content, tracking and on-page fixes for $250 a month. rank+™ adds the human layer: live competitor tracking, a landing page built every month for your hottest keywords, and a monthly senior check-in, for $400 to $600 a month. Both run on a website built to convert what they win - which is what the old $2,000 retainers rarely fixed.

Matching spend to your market

The right budget follows the value of a client and the competitiveness of your keywords. A trade business winning $8,000 jobs from suburb-level searches needs less firepower than a law firm fighting city-wide terms against national players. Before committing to any retainer, get the keyword opportunity mapped: what the searches are worth, who currently owns them, and what it takes to compete. That's precisely what a strategy session produces.
